The Paradox of Methane Emissions: The Low Hanging Fruit in the Battle to Reverse Climate Change

Spoiler Alert: This article is not about making the case against enteric emissions from our 1.5 billion mooing friends and removing juicy steaks from your dinner plate. I have chosen to leave them out of this debate. The lucky ones are best left fattening up and idyllically grazing on gentle alpine slopes; the unfortunate ones, those imprisoned in the forced-labor, confines of industrial cattle farms, are best left praying for a happy ending while they unsuspectingly await their dirty slaughterhouse sacrifice. I will write instead about methane, and share some thoughts on the more general theme of Climate change and emerging political challenges.

I consume a lot of climate change related content. This means listening and viewing many YouTube videos, religiously playing podcasts, and of course, reading plenty of articles by academics and climate change dilettantes in my spare time.

These activities have exposed me to a broad set of ideas relating to Global warming, the realm of ESG and the field of sustainability. As a realist, I also pay attention to the topic and concerns around how a just, fair energy transition might take shape. Along the way, my interest in the climate topic has also led me to conclude that the process of assessing, rationalizing and planning out a approach and a realistic transition roadmap, must also align with and be carefully informed by frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) to ensure that future outcomes do not lead to an even more unbalanced world, but instead result in equitable, non tumultuous impact on all nations, developed and developing. Following existing frameworks will avoid reinventing the wheel when it comes to determine guiding principles for the construction of any solution. Frameworks such as the UNSDG have comprehensively covered all bases when it comes to human needs and rights, across the key thematics of human, ecological and spiritual goals .
