Revisiting the Parable of the Good Samaritan
It’s all about mercy
Inspired by the Sunday readings from 07/13/25 [1]
The Gospels are mysteriously wonderful to read and re-read. There are passages and parables that so many of us have heard, learned about, Christian and non-Christian alike, that have stuck with us. This Sunday reading the parable of the Good Samaritan, opened up some new facts, commonsense truths to my heart and mind.
We all know the story. It was the “Good Samaritan”, and only, the “Good Samaritan” that helped a stranger, a “neighbor”, clinging to life, wounded , suffering on the side of a dirt road, while , so-called representatives of the religiously righteous class of the time, switched to the other side of the road to distance themselves from a man in dire need without showing an ounce of empathy and compassion.
He was just a simple traveler, or so it seems.
In the Gospel of Luke we read:
But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him
was moved with compassion at the sight.
He approached the victim,
poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them.
Then he lifted him up on his own animal,
took him to an inn, and cared for him.
The next day he took out two silver coins
and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction,
‘Take care of him.
