Deciding on The Lesser of Two Evils in America
I struggle with certain Catholic teachings and it has become a daily struggle for me. I tell myself as a perpetual sinner, that I will have the power, the will to stray no more from God’s will but still, but instead I find myself on the wrong side of the river Lethe. And hopefully not the more terrifying Acheron.
As Catholics, we remind ourselves of this condition. During every Sunday Mass, we publicly, and jointly recite with sorrow, with shame, and with piercing sadness, the Catholic Prayer of the Confiteor, a communal penitential act.
“Confiteor Deo omnipotenti et vobis fratres [et sorores], peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo, opere et omissione: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa… ”
“I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers [and sisters], that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault …. ”
Yes, that “mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa”, that heartfelt cry from unfaithful sons and daughters, you have heard or recited so many times.
